12 Days in the Far West of Nepal
Nepal's wild west is a land very different than the rest of the country. It is a land that is rarely explored by foreign visitors. The high Tibetan plains make this a dry area, especially in the monsoon season. Yet, it is also home of the largest lake in Nepal.
The people here worship in the ancient Bön religion which predates Buddhism. There is a mixture of Tibetan Buddhism and Bön religion across the region. The windswept mountains lend a forbidden aspect to the place which is sparsely populated.
On the way to Dolpo is beautiful Rara Lake National Park. The largest lake in Nepal, it is 3,000 m/9,842 ft in elevation. It covers an area of almost 10 km with 14.3 km of shoreline. It's rich blue color is only broken by the reflection of the snowcapped peaks that surround it.
Because of the remoteness of this trek, it only doable by camping. You will have guides and porters along with a cook who will provide delicious, hot meals at the various meal breaks during the day. The trek is designed for those who are moderately fit and enjoy a sense of adventure. There are some steep descents, and there will be time to become acclimatized to the higher elevations.
The remote far west is a wonderful place where you will see very few foreigners, but have a chance to experience the local culture of west Nepal.
